The Lithuanian Theatre, Music and Cinema Museum was officially institutionalized in 1992 although until then it had been functioning at different periods as Theatre Museum and later as Museum of Theatre and Music.

By this origin the Museum is very original and specific. We`ll find changes, which have the historical and cultural value.

On the initiative of Balys Sruoga and Vincas Krėvė-Mickevičius the Theatre Museum was founded already in 1926 in Kaunas Vytautas the Great University. 1936 the Museum was transferred to the State Theatre. During WWII the exhibits were dispersed.

Over 300.000 exhibits are stored in the Museum, and only a small part is exhibited in the expositions "From the collections of the Museum of Theatre, Music and Cinema. 19 C to the first half of the 20 C" and "Musical instruments of Lithuanian craftsmen".

The exhibits are from the numerous collections of art societies, art companies, unions of artists, art schools and other cultural institutions and private collections.

Valuable collections belonged to Konstantinas Glinskis, Juozas Vaičkus, Borisas Dauguvietis, Teofilė Vaičiūnienė, Unė Babickaitė, Ona Rymaitė, Juozas Naujalis, Juozas Tallat-Kelpša, Konstantinas Galkauskas, Kipras Petrauskas, Jadvyga Zabielaitė-Karvelienė, Mstislavas Dobužinskis, Liudas Truikys, Vladimiras Dubeneckis, Vytautas Palaima, Jonas Mekas, Steponas Uzdonas, Arūnas Žebriūnas and others.
